Jade and Dan Scott founded Sae Seaweed in 2020 marking the next chapter in their journey together as husband and wife and founders of Fore / Adventure, a wild food adventure business in Dorset with a passion for connecting people to nature. Both their expertise in wild food and in depth knowledge of the Dorset coastline perfectly situates Jade and Dan to hand harvest wild seaweed along the Jurassic Coast.

A love of seaweed began very early for the couple. Living and working beside the sea, they were always in contact with the ocean whether on their kayaking adventures or on their foraging courses. Seaweed became the main wild ingredient that caught their attention and their tastebuds!

The motivation behind Sae was always to create a business that would help reconnect others to the wild and share the health benefits of natures larder. Their base in Dorset offered all of this and more. With heathland, harbours and miles of sandy shoreline, with a wealth of wild plants and seaweeds on hand. This was a playground like no other for them and their three small children and the perfect location for Sae Seaweed to be born.

What are the health benefits of Seaweed?

A passion for this wild food grew as Jade and Dan discovered that Seaweed has so many health benefits. It is packed with vitamins and minerals, from Vitamin A, B, C, E, K, iron, copper, potassium, zinc, calcium, magnesium, omega 3s and polyphenols, and antioxidants that benefit your body.

Early on in their journey Dan would bring back seaweed for Jade who is a passionate cook. She began to regularly cook with seaweed and use it in their Forage and Feast events. The feedback from clients was incredibly positive with many people not knowing that you could even eat this sea vegetable and surprised that there were so many different species of seaweed and how tasty they are.

Sustainable Seaweed Harvesting

Throughout their 16 years developing their skills and offerings at Fore, Jade and Dan have gained a multitude of qualifications to accredit their courses and develop their wild food knowledge. Dan has gained his NCFE Level 4 Ethnobotany and plant identification award. They have both worked closely with Natural England to enable them to harvest seaweed seasonally and sustainably to agreed quotas. They have been awarded a license from the Crown Estate to commercially harvest seaweed along the Dorset coast.

Sae is based in studland and employs local people. At Sae we wear our sustainability on our sleeve and minimise our impact on the natural world. We use boats and kayaks to deliver us to where we hand harvest wild seaweed. Adhering to the code of conduct agreed with Natural England.

Sae seaweed is carefully hand picked by our Foragers from Fore / Adventure in clean unpolluted waters along the Dorset coast. Then dried at a low temperature to preserve it’s naturally rich nutritional content. Jade and Dan have designed their packaging to be eco friendly. They are working on designing refills for their products and commit to using recycable and sustainable packaging
